Writing Center Visit
The writing center helped me re-organize my writing a lot. I walked in not knowing what order I was doing my quotes, and for the parts where you had to explain how it relates to the thesis, my explanation was a mess. I had Douglas as my writing fellow, and he was great help.
The biggest thing that I learned was to not worry about the little things; this was only my first rough draft, so I had plenty of time to make grammatical corrections and make sentences flow more easily. If I focused on the tiny things, it would have taken me much longer in writing my draft. This helped me so much, and I’m so glad I got this correction. I just let the words come out, and I ended up editing after. This process took much shorter.
How have your priorities changed from middle school to high school?
Middle school to high school is a big change. I definitely did not know what I was in for. First, the homework load in 8th grade, especially, was almost nothing. I remember that the longest I spent on homework last year was a hour and a half. As a freshman, I have much, much more homework. I really have to work on my time management and think ahead to what is due in a couple of days, and start that a couple days prior to the due date. In middle school, I could do something the night before when something big was due. Now, I cannot do that.
I’ve also learned to use my tutorials very wisely. Last year in flex, we did a little bit of work but I normally socialized. Now, I go see my teachers almost every day. I want to use my time well and I feel productive when I go see my teachers, but it’s hard a lot of the times because majority of my friends use tutorial as a socializing time, and I want to be with them. However, I have to make the mature move and go do work. It definitely pays off, though!

Free Post- Christmas Eve
I walked into the kitchen with the aroma of cookies baking and milk. Christmas music has been playing all night because my family is big with Christmas. We open up one designated present because my mom gives my sister and I matching pajamas to wear Christmas night. We look like little girls dressing alike, but this is the only time we don’t mind matching. My family and eat the cookies and go to bed.
I wrote this because this is one of my favorite memories recreated every year. There’s never arguing, and we are all a loving family. We usually watch a cheesy lifetime Christmas movies, and then my sister and I make fun of how some parts were cheesy. We also get a little Christmas outfit for my dog, and laugh at her trying to take it off, and after awhile, her just accepting that she can’t get it off.
Literary Analysis Process
The literary analysis I am writing is very hard for me. I’ve written so many things, the just erased it. My thesis is about when Ralph kept on forgetting the word rescue, Golding could portray him to be a savage. I just feel like I am being repetitive because all my quotes are when Ralph forgets, and Piggy corrects him. I also feel like my description of how it relates to the thesis is repetitive. This is hardest thing for me so far with writing my paper.
I did go to the writing center, though, and it helped a lot. They told me to not worry about this little things and just keep on writing, and I can go back to that later. It ended up helping me a tremendous amount, and I have another page written because of that advise. So, my advise to those who are struggling is to not restrain yourself and just keep on writing and whatever comes out, comes out. It’s only our rough draft so we will have time to fix whatever is incorrect.

Symbolism
Jane is shopping at the mall. She is using all of her money like any other teenager, until she is pushed while walking from a fight. She turns around to see that 2 people are having a fight. She doesn’t do anything and keeps on walking. The fight hits another person named Evan, and he just takes a picture of the fight and uploads it to social media.
Finally, a person named Emily brakes up the fight. She gives the 2 men band aids, and doesn’t leave until they are okay. This quality the Emily has is very special. At a certain point inline, you have to decide if you are going to be like Jane and Evan, or Emily. Everyone thinks that they will be like Emily, but when a situation arises, they get scared and walk away.
Jane: Bystander, scared, doesn’t step up
Evan: Bystander, tries to be “cool” by uploading the fight
Emily: Upstander, peace, order
How to live with a sibling
Living with a sibling can be tough. You are sometimes not favored, even though your parents say they don’t have favorites. Follow this guide to learn how to live with a sibling. First things first, create a good bond. You will create no greater friends than your brother/sister. Even though you might think you are better friends with someone else, you aren’t. You and your sibling will know each other so well that they can order your food at restaurants without even asking you. Second, do some pranks! You will have the biggest laughs with your sibling, and this will also strengthen your bond. It’s always fun doing pranks because you know that you are going to get something in return, so be on the lookout.
Lastly, enjoy their company, especially if you have a older sibling. Even though there are many bumps along the road, and you feel like you hate your sibling at some points, you will miss them so much when he/she leaves. I am saying this off of my experience; my sister just left to go to college, and I miss seeing her every day. Take in their presence, and occasionally go to the movies or somewhere with your sibling.

Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. Not very often my whole extended family is together at once. This includes my grandma, uncles, aunts, cousins, and of course, my family. I love sitting around the table and taking in their presence. My family has a lot of humor, and normally at some point I laugh until I can’t breathe. From telling me what’s in style, to taking selfies on snapchat, it’s never a dull moment with them.
After my sister left for college, I really started to take gratitude when my family is together. I was so used to her being home, and now she is starting her life away from home. I leave in 3 years, and I will do the same. Now when she comes home, I enjoy it and make new memories to remember. 3 of my cousins are graduating this year, and I remember when we were all kids playing uno, building forts, and playing twister. There’s so many countless memories from thanksgiving from our childhood, but I know that we will make new ones.
critical scene from LOTF
I think that a critical scene from Lord of the Flies that everyone needs to understand was when Ralph was running for his life (literally), and encountered the pig's skull on the stick. This was in chapter 12 and the conch was mentioned again even though it has been shattered by now. It said, “He walked slowly into the middle of the clearing and looked steadily at the skull that gleamed as white as ever the conch had done and seemed to jeer him cynically.”
After the discussion in class, the conch is also a symbolic object in that line. It used to be pink, but it eventually wore away and faded into white. When the boys arrived, they were rational humans, but as time passed, they could care less about being rescued and the pink “wore away”. The pig’s skull is symbolic to the conch. The pig used to be pink, and now it’s white. When I read that line for the first time, I did not read it that deeply and didn’t see its symbolism. Now I see its symbolism and that is why this line is an important line for everyone to know.

My own prompt
At Ninfas, there was always this one desert that a symbolic item for me as a child. It had fried dough, bananas, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate chips. Every time my family went to eat at Ninfas, there was question about ordering that desert or not. The flavor of this desert was so indescribably good, and there were never any remains.
However, as I got older, my family and I just stopped ordering it. This was a symbolic item of my childhood because it showed that I am growing up. I got this desert about a week ago for the first time in about 3 years, and while I was eating, childhood memories were popping in my head. I associate this desert with wonderful memories, and I will always get this desert every once in a while as memory of my childhood.
Lord of the Flies Response
The passage I am going to use is:
The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away. Once there was this and that; and now--and the ship had gone. [... Jack refusing to give Piggy the floor when he has the conch...]
"The rules!" shouted Ralph. "You're breaking the rules!"
"Who cares?"
Ralph summoned his wits.
"Because the rules are the only thing we've got!"
But Jack was shouting against him.
"Bollocks to the rules! We're strong--we hunt! If there's a beast, we'll hunt it down! We'll close in and beat and beat and beat--!" (91)
This passage is important in The Lord of the Flies in so many ways. Rules are the only thing that are holding the boys together. They frequently argue, and dispute about the fire. The rules were the only thing to hold them together, and in this passage the rules are abandoned.
This is significant because from here on now the boys will start to fall apart, and so will their “society”. I read ahead a little bit, and this is true. Even though this book has had a slow start, it has a very good plot, and I am excited to read more to see what happens. So far, Jack and Rodger are the only two boys that have lost their sanity.

My explanation of Human Nature
I think that human nature could be described as full of love and goodness. People want the best, and want the best for others. I value the people that are optimists because many people look at their failures instead of the good things that have happened and the possibilities to come. I try to be a optimist, but a lot of the times I am too hard on myself and don’t think of my acomplishments. Instead, I look at all the failures I’ve made.
I recognize human nature as love and goodness because I am raised in a loving family. My parents want the best for me, and I am grounded in my faith. When something bad happens, instead of only saying how bad they feel, they say that something better will come in the future. My parents are huge optimist, and that’s a good trait to have. My household is what I look at when deciding what human nature is, but some people may look at human nature many different ways.
Response to Lord of The Flies
So far, I’m not a fan of Lord of The Flies. It was a very boring start, and I struggled to keep reading without being distracted. A group of young kids are stuck in an island, and that’s basically all the reader knows right now. I particularly do not like it when the author doesn’t give background information, and doesn’t explain how they got there. I’m the type of reader that likes to know all the facts early, so that as i’m reading, I can fully know what’s happening and asses it with a more understanding.
However, I do like how the author uses vivid details. It feels like I’m standing there when Golding explains the island. I find it interesting how everything is pink. The mountains are pink, the rocks are pink, and more. I feel like I’m in candy land when I read something else that is pink. I hope that the book will get more interesting. Some books have a slow start, but once the action starts, it gets interesting.

reading response to The Heir
Nothing has happened much in The Heir since the last time I wrote an update. I fell like the author is trying to add some unnecessary pages so that the selection process will not go by so quickly. I am really not a fan of Eadlyn. She is so spoiled, and I am irritated by her when I read. She doesn’t have a filter, and says whatever she wants. Eadlyn also feels that since she will be the next queen, she can be rude to anyone.
I actually like how the author makes the reader not like the main character. She must have put a lot of work into deciding Eadlyn’s personality, and making a reader see Eadlyn entirely. Kierra Cass is actually very good with personalities I feel like. All of the characters have a unique personality, and none are the same. I love Ahren’s personality because it’s the polar opposite of Eadlyn’s personality. Cats must have planned that intentionally because even though Ahren and Eadlyn are twins, they have completely different personalities.
Fall Break free post
The day I got my dog was my all-time favorite day of my life so far. I’ve been wanting a dog since I was 6, but was told that I could only get a hypoallergenic one because I have asthma. I still couldn’t get a hypoallergenic dog because when I was little, every time when I would go to a friends house I would get allergies from their pets. To make it better, my mom was not an animal person whatsoever. I remember coming home crying one day because my teacher asked who all in this class has a dog, and everyone in the class rose their hand except for me. I remember being so sad laster that day.
When I was about 13, I finally asked my asthma doctor if I could only have a hypoallergenic dog. I was so shocked by his answer because he said no! He told me that I didn’t have to have a hypoallergenic dog, because with both groups, I would have allergies. I later researched for countless dos and ended up finding a baby black labrador on google. She was a girl and was ready to get once she was 6 weeks old, and was from Ponchutoula. I remember being so full pf joy that day! I asked countless times during Christmas for a dog, and I’m finally getting one. I later named her Amber, and we are inseparable to this day. She is 2 1/2 now, and loves to snuggle. A dog is truly a person’s soulmate. She always knows when I’m sad, and tries to snuggle with me to make me feel better. I even know her different barks, and what she wants from them.

Procrastination: Is Your Future Self Getting a Bad Deal?
I read AoW Procrastination, and it told the readers many reasons why people procrastinate. The author used a simple example for procrastinating by not doing the dishes until the next day. I liked how the author listed the downfalls on procrastinating on the dishes. He stated how the food remains will be crusty and will result in sticking to the plate. When we procrastinate, the job actually becomes harder the next day. Scrubbing off food off of a plate is much harder than just washing the dishes the night before.
When reading this article, I noticed that many of the reasons why I procrastinate is true. The one that stood out the most to me was that people procrastinate because we don’t have enough energy, and our future selves will. When I have a homework assignment that is due in a couple of days, sometimes I will procrastinate because I’m too tired. The next day I’ll have so much work to do because I didn’t do any of that assignment. What I could do instead is do a little that day, and then the rest the day after. This will result with me not being more stressed.

Christmas is the best time of the year. My house has an aroma of Christmas goodies baking. I usually go all out when decorating, and even listen to Christmas music. Christmas is one of those holidays where when I go into the neighborhood looking at lights, I get butterflies in stomach, and smile to myself. I always judge the outdoor Christmas decorations, being a little kid and deciding which one is the best.
I love the cold breeze that kisses my cheeks, and my fingertips getting numb from being so cold. Most of all, I love being with my family for christmas. Not a lot of times our whole family gets together for one big meal. This includes my cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. I love hearing where they are in life, and seeing how sweet they are. I look forward to our family dinners. There’s always lots of laughs, and I can’t wait for Christmas this year!

reading response The Heir
In The Heir, Eadlyn’s brother, Ahren, convinced her to go on a date with one of the men. Eadlyn reluctantly agreed, but her date went terribly wrong: he tried to get to know Eadlyn’s inside world, and she didn’t want to open up. She then blames Ahren for making her go. Eadlyn needs to just let go and open up. I think she’s afraid that once she is truly herself, she’ll find a companion to help her rule. She does’t want a companion because she wants to do all the work by herself and get all the credit, which I don’t like.
I’m really starting to like Ahren because he has a good personality and judgement. When Eadlyn blamed him for her date, he told her that there’s something that she’s holding back, which is true. He is true to himself. Sometimes I wish that Ahren was in the selection, because he has such a better personality, but Eadlyn is 7 minutes older and she will have the Heir. So far, I’m not a fan of Eadlyn.

short story
I was closing down my shop, but when I turned off the
lights, a human figure appeared. I tuned them back on, and the figure was gone,
I went back and forth with the lights, until I realized that somebody is there.
I’ve never been afraid of the dark, but this was pretty unusual. I decided to
call my friend to come over, but when I pulled out my device, a message from a
blocked number said, “Watch your back”. I reluctantly ignored the text and
called my friend. Instead of ringing, it went straight to voicemail. I turned
around to grab my keys, when a face popped out of nowhere. She had no pupils,
ghost white face, and blood dripping down.
I screamed at the top of my lungs, until she somehow closed
my mouth. She then sucked the life out of me, and put her spirit into my body.
She wanted to have a body. All I saw was blackness, until I was awoken with the
aroma of coffee and eggs sizzling on the stove.
Harrison Bergeron reading response
Harrison Bergeron is an intriguing, dystopian short story. Basically, there is finally equality and everyone are equal. The smart people wear hearing devices, so when they think about something deeply, a loud noise will ring, maligning them forget what they were just thinking about. They call these type of people “handicapped” people. Only the truly dumb people aren’t “handicapped,” like George’s wife. As I was reading, I noticed how it was written in 3rd person. I liked how 0the narrator didn’t distinguish himself/herself, and used simple language. There was no fancy vocabulary used, yet the story was still appealing, and suspenseful.
When reading a short story, there’s 3 different type of level questions. Level one would be questions that can be answered when referring back to the story. There’s always a right answer. Level two requires analysis and interpretation. Lastly, Level three is open-ended and goes beyond the context. An example of level 3 could be themes. When reading Harrison Bergeron, I could generate all 3 levels of questions.

Dear 9-year old
Dear 9 year old, have fun with life! As you get older year by year, you have more responsibilities. Make a mess at the dinner table! Your parents can’t say, “you eat like a kid,” because you are a kid! Enjoy life without it being stressful. If you get a bad grade, it’s not the end of the world because you’re in 3rd grade. Also, enjoy naps! I know that no kids like naps, but once you get older, you are going to want to have naps so bad, but there’s no time to take them.
Lastly, hang out with whomever you want. Make a true friend with someone that is always there fir you. You want to be so close that you have blind makeovers and polish each others nails and eat cheese puffs together. It’s certainly okay to have more than one friend, and I would recommend it. Just don’t tattletale on your friends; you might loose their trust for awhile. There’s no need to fret if someone took your crayon.
Reading Response The Heir
In the Heir, I’m starting to see how selfish Eadlyn is. The men have arrived for the Selection, and they were telling Eadlyn how beautiful she is. Her response was, “And so I’ve been told.” She’s very spoiled because she is the royal princess, but she really needs to see herself in a mirror because she is so rude to people. One man who arrived doesn’t speak English, he speaks Sweden and has a personal translator. I really thought that Eadlyn was going to be snooty and dismiss him, but she was actually very nice to him.
I realize that Eadlyn is being rude to these men because she wants them to leave and to be over with this in 3 months. However, she really just might find her true love through this process. She needs to be herself, and open up. I hope that Eadlyn will soon realize how she is acting. I really like how the author sets up the scene. She uses vivid details, and I feel like I’m standing right there witnessing all of what’s happening.

9/11 attacks
The 9/11 attacks happened on September 11, 2001. 19 terriosts hijacked 4 planes and made suicide attacks into the World Trade Center in New York, The Pentagon in Washington DC, and the last one crashed on a field in Pennsylvania. 3,000 people died from the Washington DC and New York attacks, along with 400 police officers and fire fighters. Pictures were being broadcasted of the Twin Towers going down on tv. It was scary for people on the scene, and people who were watching the news. The first plane hit the World Trade Center and left a burning hole on the 80th floor, trading those on higher levels., Minuted later, the second plane hit the south tower.
These attacks were Islamic tourists from Saudi Arabia. The Pentagon attack hit the west side of the Pentagon. When the Twin Towers went down, only 6 people survived and 10,000 were injured seriously. This must have been tragic for the 6 people that survived. It has heartbreaking to see your colleagues die, and you survive. President George Bush gave a good speech saying, “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America.

Free reading update
In The Heir, I’m finally starting to understand and get to know Eadlyn’s personality. She won’t let anything stand in front of her, and doesn’t want a companion at the moment to help her with work. However, when her father told her about the selection, she didn’t argue with him. Instead, she went to talk to her brother about it and tried to come up with a different solution. Since she’s just 18, Eadlyn is a closed-minded thinker and thinks that she won’t find her true love during this process.
I think that Eadlyn being a narrow-minded thinker is the only thing holding her back from being crowned queen. I think that she will grow out of it and that it will go away as she matures more. I like how the author really understands teens because she showed that even royal teenagers are closed-minded, and it’s true. It helps me understand Eadlyn more because we think alike.

Summer camp
Pinecove is, without a doubt, the best summer camp on Earth! Oh how I miss it! I’ve made so many camp friends that I will forever cherish and can’t wait to see them next summer. Whenever you first arrive at camp, it reminds me of Disney World because all the counselors are cheering in 2 lines as the car drive in-between those 2 lines. They have silly string and video cameras to video. It’s crazy because this camp is in Texas, so it’s excruciatingly hot. When we arrive, the counselors are drenched in sweat but they are still cheering because they are so excited!
We have different types of activities every day that we do with our cabin. I like how we do the activities with our cabin because you grow closer to them and create special bonds. Camp chants are probably my top 3 favorite things about camp! Everyone’s in a good mood, and no-one ever judges you! Every night we have club, and this by far is my favorite part of this camp! We all gather and sing to worship Jesus and later have bible study. The songs are such a fun way to worship Jesus, and there’s different motions for certain songs and everyone dances. I have a countdown ready for camp next year, and I am so excited to wake up early every day for a week with my camp friends. I am so proud to say that not one minute at camp was boring.

The Heir
I just started The Heir, by Kierra Cass, following the previous 3 books in the Selection series. After Edalyn found out that she has to go through the selection like her father did, she is distraught. Her royal parents are making her do this because the country of Iliea is going through a hardship with the cases being gone, so her father, also known as the king, wants to make the country happier by doing this. The selection is where there is going to be around 30 men that Edalyn has to pick for her future husband. With Edalyn being just 18, she can’t even think about having a companion.
I like how this book is written in 1st person; I feel like I get to know Edalyn better whenever it’s her who’s narrating the book. When she found out she would have to go through the selection, the reader was’t confused if Edalyn would like this or not because the reader knows her personality enough to make a judgment. I also like how Edalyn treats her maid. Most people are condescending when they talk to maids, But Edalyn treater her as her friend, and she is. This tells you the type of personality that Edalyn has.

A little information about me
My name is Hayley, and I would think of my writing as piña coladas. Sometimes I’m proud of my writing, but sometimes I feel like I could do better, but I can’t think of what I would do instead to improve. Just like piña coladas: sometimes they’re really good, but on the other case, you can’t list what you would put in the drink instead for it to be better. I love writing when there’s a fun topic to write about; I go on and on, and have to make myself come to a conclusion sentence instead of continuing to write. But when there’s a difficult topic to write about, I love the thrill of it being complicated, and having to really think what you have to write about. I think that this makes you understand yourself better because you might have a certain opinion about something, that you never knew you had.
I always change my mind, but this goal has been consistent: I want to study journalism in college and have a career in some form of that. I do high school cheer, and I love it! I just recently quit dance a couple months ago because I didn’t have the passion for it anymore. Also my studio had tough teachers, and I just wanted to do it as a hobby. I still love watching dance, and I’m in Mrs. Chrest’s dance class. I’m the type of person where once you get home, I start doing my homework. Once I’m finished, I’ll be lazy. I don’t like starting my homework late because while I’m watching tv, I’ll be thinking, “I could’ve been doing me homework right now.”

Summer reading response
Deadly Little Secrets is by Laurie Stolarz. Stolarz is the type of author who knows how to trick with readers minds. This bone-chilling book is an adventure to read, and once you start reading, you can't put it down! An anonymous stalker is stalking the main character, Camellia. they're leaving strange notes in her room mentioning how she will die, and to be careful. She also gets calls from this stalker with a no-caller ID. Camellia would tell her parents, but her mother is going through a difficult hardship because her sister tried to commit suicide.
As I was reading Deadly Little Secrets, I noticed how the author makes the reader second guess who the stalker is because there is little hints throughout the book where you think, "Oh I finally know who this person is!' Then, that suspicion will change in 10 pages. The only downside to this book was that it was a very slow start, and it was very boring in the beginning. However, once you get past that section, it becomes an addictive book. I would recommend this book to my friends; it's a great story!
